In 2009, Tesco used the phrase, "Change for Good" as advertising, which is trade marked by Unicef for charity usage but not for commercial or retail use, which prompted the agency to say, "It is the first time in Unicef’s history that a commercial entity has purposely set out to capitalise on one of our campaigns and subsequently damage an income stream which several of our programmes for children are dependent on." They went on to call on the public "...who have children’s welfare at heart, to consider carefully who they support when making consumer choices."
In his 12 lectures on the Book of Revelation, the great Austrian philosopher Rudolf Steiner unveils the mysteries of Saint John’s vision and show it to be a profound description of Christian initiation. As Steiner says, “The deepest truths of Christianity may be considered quite naturally in connection with this document, for it contains a great part of the mysteries of Christianity, that is, the profoundest part of what may be described as esoteric Christianity.”
"This is a most fascinating book about an intriguing but also a controversial topic. It is written by an expert in a very straightforward style and is illustrated by many clear figures. Why Stock Markets Crash will surely raise scientific interest in the emerging new field of econophysics."--Cars H. Hommes, Director of the Center for Nonlinear Dynamics in Economics and Finance, University of Amsterdam
The economy had been growing for most of the Roaring Twenties. It was a technological golden age, as innovations such as the radio, automobile, aviation, telephone, and the power grid were deployed and adopted. Companies that had pioneered these advances, like Radio Corporation of America (RCA) and General Motors, saw their stocks soar. Financial corporations also did well, as Wall Street bankers floated mutual fund companies (then known as investment trusts) like the Goldman Sachs Trading Corporation. Investors were infatuated with the returns available in the stock market, especially by the use of leverage through margin debt.
I don’t even know how many records I own, but it’s in the thousands. I have records, tapes, CDs, and computer files going all the way back to the 1880s. I even have one recording from 1869. A scientist was studying sound waves and recorded a woman singing “Clare De Lune.” He recorded it as wavy lines on a soot-covered paper. Someone recently scanned it and converted it back into sound. It doesn’t sound very good, but it’s amazing that you could retrieve sound from marks on a sooty piece of paper.
Many factors likely contributed to the collapse of the stock market. Among the more prominent causes were the period of rampant speculation (those who had bought stocks on margin not only lost the value of their investment, they also owed money to the entities that had granted the loans for the stock purchases), tightening of credit by the Federal Reserve (in August 1929 the discount rate was raised from 5 percent to 6 percent), the proliferation of holding companies and investment trusts (which tended to create debt), a multitude of large bank loans that could not be liquidated, and an economic recession that had begun earlier in the summer.
As we mark the 10th anniversary of the collapse of Lehman Brothers, there are still ongoing debates about the causes and consequences of the financial crisis, and whether the lessons needed to prepare for the next one have been absorbed. But looking ahead, the more relevant question is what actually will trigger the next global recession and crisis, and when.
I have to admit that the feeling I had before the initial crash was intense and urgent. Since then it has been erratic. I picked the end of December into January because this is when Pluto is exactly conjunct the Dow Jones first house. Of course if the date or time was off in that chart (which is always possible) then we could have seen the hit at 0 degree instead of the 1 degree in the official chart.
So happy to have found your insight! I am a bit blown away by what I am reading about the upcoming changes to the world economy. Especially when I saw my chart – I have south node in Taurus, Jupiter in Taurus, north node Scorpio, and Uranus in Scorpio, in their natural houses – these seem like all the same actors you are talking about! I also have a lot going on in Cancer (Sun, Mercury, more) and the fourth house.
“There’s no question when you look at last week, some of the selling is the result of programmatic selling because as volatility goes up, some of these algorithms force people to sell,” Solomon told CNBC’s Wilfred Frost. “Market structure can, at times, contribute to volatility and one of the things that we’re spending a bunch of time thinking about at the firm is how changes in market structure over the course of the last 10 years will affect market activity.”
“The shift from active to passive asset management, and specifically the decline of active value investors, reduces the ability of the market to prevent and recover from large drawdowns,” Joyce Chang and Jan Loeys wrote in the Monday note. Actively managed accounts make up only about one-third of equity assets under management, with active single-name trading responsible for just 10 per cent or so of trading volume, JPMorgan estimates.
In 2007, Tesco was placed under investigation by the UK Office of Fair Trading (OFT) for acting as part of a cartel of five supermarkets (Safeway, Tesco, Asda, Morrisons and Sainsburys) and a number of dairy companies to fix the price of milk, butter and cheese. In December 2007, Asda, Sainsburys and the former Safeway admitted that they acted covertly against the interests of consumers while publicly claiming that they were supporting 5,000 farmers recovering from the foot-and-mouth crisis. They were fined a total of £116 million.
These blogs also often lead to additional resources you can use to further your education. Generally, they mention other bloggers or books they’ve read to help them on their investing journey. This a method that Robert Farrington, investor and founder of TheCollegeInvestor.com recommends to his readers. "I highly suggest reading blogs and websites geared towards beginning investors," Farrington says. "There are a lot of amazing free resources out there for individuals looking to learn how to invest. For example, we have our free Learn How To Invest video training course, that goes through the basics of how to get started investing."
Why might a central bank underreact? It might not detect a shift in mood until it is too late, particularly if hard data across the economy look strong. It might not wish to be seen to be beholden to markets: willing to slash rates or take other action the moment stock indexes slip (particularly if the personnel making monetary-policy decisions are relatively new to their roles and keen to establish their independence). It might even welcome a bit of a droop in mood if it is concerned that growth has been too fast, unemployment too low, and inflation about to spike as a consequence.
The resultant rise of mass unemployment is seen as a result of the crash, although the crash is by no means the sole event that contributed to the depression. The Wall Street Crash is usually seen as having the greatest impact on the events that followed and therefore is widely regarded as signaling the downward economic slide that initiated the Great Depression. True or not, the consequences were dire for almost everybody. Most academic experts agree on one aspect of the crash: It wiped out billions of dollars of wealth in one day, and this immediately depressed consumer buying.

I agree completely with a previous poster, America has had enough of the Bush family. I don’t see any Republican winning after they have boxed themselves into the corner they are in. No way we would elect the hanging chad Governor who helped steal an election. Also, we have had enough Clinton’s, tho I am inclined to believe Hillary will win because it is time enough for a woman to be President.
But let's assume that you're not in the stock market and don't plan to be. The last chapter broadens the discussion to consider a wide range of problems confronting the world in the period from the year of publication (2002) to the potential "end of the growth era" around 2050. Many of the trends described have only become more pressing since 2002. This book is both important and fascinating--not just for investors but also for citizens of an uncertain world.
The Retirement Risk EvaluatorRob pointed out the errors in the Old School safe withdrawal rate studies in May 2002. That post kicked off the biggest controversy in the history of the internet. Today, The Wall Street Journal, Smart Money and The Economist all acknowledge that Rob had it right all along. But they still don’t provide calculators that give the right numbers! The safe withdrawal rate is not a constant number but VARIES with changes in the valuation level that applies on the day the retirement begins. This calculator provides all the details you need for effective planning.
Markets started off looking firm this morning but by mid afternoon the Heng Seng Index broke below the key psychological 30,000 level as trade war concerns once again reared its ugly head. First came the Trump administration announcing a further $50b worth of tariffs on China imports followed by return fire from China threatening reciprocal tariffs on 106 U.S. product.
« Les FNB permettent d’acheter, en une seule action, une brochette de titres qui reflète la composition d’un indice. Les FNB permettent donc de diversifier aisément un portefeuille, un peu comme un fonds commun de placement. Mais comme les FNB ne sont pas gérés activement par un gestionnaire, leurs frais de gestion sont minimes… parfois à peine 0,06 %. Des poussières par rapport aux fonds communs qui prélèvent aisément 2,5 % par an. » (source)

Also: August 13 1999 was the significant future date on the Aztec Sun calendar from Mexico of 500 years ago, and August 13 1999 was predicted by the Aztecs to be an important day of change for mankind, that would change the world, as described in the book: "Day of Destiny, Where will you be on August 13 1999?", by John Mini, published 1998 by Trans-Hyperborean Institute of Science.
I posted as Guest Blog Entry at the Married (with Debt) blog yesterday. It's called The Buy-and-Hold Myth. Juicy Excerpt: In the used-car market, the price of the car being sold is the result of a battle waged between the car seller and the car buyer. The seller wants a high price. The buyer wants a low one. Each side has to give something or risk seeing the negotiation fall through. The end result of the battle is usually a price that is more or less right. The car-selling market…
I just checked my sister’s chart and noticed that she has Mars in Taurus at 3 degrees. Her Birthday is Oct 20th, 1973 (Repalle, India) 1:20 PM IST. How is this going to effect her? She works in a Bank(!!) and has a 10 year old daughter(April 24th, 2008 Taurus). Her husband is an Aries who lost his job a month back. Since, I saw Taurus in 4th house, I am worried (hope it has got nothing to do with health of any family members). Appreciate any input, if you have time, please.
