Rather than trying to time the market, which is incredibly hard to do and often counterproductive, it can be helpful to remember that the attractive long-term returns to the stock market include many market crashes. Depending on your measurement criteria, time-period and exactly what index you look at well-diversified portfolio have averaged returns of around 6%-10% a year over time.
People trading stock will prefer to trade on the most popular exchange since this gives the largest number of potential counter parties (buyers for a seller, sellers for a buyer) and probably the best price. However, there have always been alternatives such as brokers trying to bring parties together to trade outside the exchange. Some third markets that were popular are Instinet, and later Island and Archipelago (the latter two have since been acquired by Nasdaq and NYSE, respectively). One advantage is that this avoids the commissions of the exchange. However, it also has problems such as adverse selection. Financial regulators are probing dark pools.
I've posted Entry #5 to my monthly column at the Balance Junkie site. It's called Five Things Tim Tebow Can Teach Us About Stock Investing. Juicy Excerpt: The poll shows that the explanations people give for liking Tebow or Manning are rationalizations. People decide for emotional reasons who to support and then turn on the brainpower to concoct explanations for those emotional beliefs that sound sensible. When stocks are priced at three times fair value, there will be dozens of reasons…
There is no better way to invest over a long term than the stock market. I suggest no-load Vanguard index funds due to their solid performance and very low fees. They have several to choose from. You will probably need a thousand dollars to get started with them. Charles Schwab has no-load low fee index funds that you can open with as little as fifty (SWPPX), to one-hundred dollars. Then you need the confident approach of a turtle: easy, persistent, confident, rolling with the volatility and not panicking while gradually building wealth a basket at a time over a long haul, and out performing the rabbit minded investor. Remember: keep a steady, modest cutting expectation over a long haul.
He’d say that Trump had a brilliant strategy for getting elected because he used to tell me that it’s not the middle class that decides elections — it’s the All Star Wrestling fans, the 15% to 20% clueless, bigoted, narrow-minded, dumbest people in the country, who are easily influenced. Those are the people who have been most pissed off in recent decades because their wages and earning power have been falling as a result of foreign and immigrant workers. Trump [targeted] them squarely and won them by [a margin of] about 80%.
I recently posted a Guest Blog Entry at the Money & Such blog entitled Stocks Are a Lot Less Risky Than You Think. Juicy Excerpt: The price volatility of stocks is an illusion. It’s not real. Change how you react to it and it goes away. Stop taking volatility seriously and it goes “Poof!”. There were several good comments posted in response to the blog entry. Juicy Excerpt: I think you provide a unique approach to the topic. It sounds to me very similar to the idea of…
You might be wondering if we’ve endured one too many ghost apparitions. To suggest that no less than Warren Buffett, whose net worth is north of $80.0 billion, expects the market to reverse its bullish course seems not just scary, it seems silly. But Warren Buffett’s predictions for 2018 call for at least a market correction—if not an outright crash.
I will be writing a monthly column on the dangers of Buy-and-Hold and on our need to move on as a society to promotion of the Valuation-Informed Indexing model at the Balance Junkie site. My first entry there is called The Gene Mauch Rule for Investing Success. Juicy Excerpt: Bull markets are the stock market’s equivalent to baseball winning streaks. During bull markets, the temptation is to get overly excited about stocks, to count the phony and temporary bull market gains as permanent.…
But you should also crunch a few numbers and then do a little soul searching. Estimate how Vanguard's suggested mix would have performed during the late 2007-through-early 2009 slump, when stock prices declined nearly 60% in value and investment-grade bonds gained about 7%. If you think you would cave and begin selling in the face of such a loss, you might want to dial back your target stock position a bit.

Bref.

Australia is in the strange position of having a Scorpio Prime Minister at the moment and a Scorpio former Prime Minister too. The leader of the Opposition is a Taurus. These two signs are opposite and Uranus about to enter Taurus suggests Canberra will be rocked in May, June 2018. This goes beyond a deep shift at the top of the two parties. It is also about Australia’s values – Taurus and Scorpio are very much about what the nation won’t sell out for. So this goes way beyond the lightning bolt of Uranus in Taurus on the world economy mid-year and into huge political questions for the nation. Scorpio, Scorpio, Taurus – you couldn’t make it up!
I have posted a Guest Blog Entry at the Invest It Wisely site called The Biggest Unknown Risk of Stock Investing. Juicy Excerpt: My strong sense is that most investors have not thought through carefully what it means to stick with stocks for the long run. To try to stick with stocks for the long run and fail to do so is the worst of all possible worlds. The possibility of becoming a failed Buy-and-Hold investor is the biggest unknown risk of stock investing. Juicy Comment #1: I agree…
Finally, sentiment. If the busboy just bought a new diesel VW with the money he made trading Apple? Keep an eye on things. There was a TV ad during the naz peak (1999?) for Schwab or whomever. FADE IN: Guy standing next to broken down car on the side of the road. Tow truck pulls up. Tow driver hooks him up and off they go. Inside the truck the passenger points to a big color picture of an island. He says “what’s that?” Tow driver says “that’s mine.” The passenger looks incredulous...”You own an island?” Tow driver smiles “well yea, I bought it with the money I made in the market…but, it’s not really just an island.” passenger bites...”Then what is it?” Driver replies…”it’s a country.”
Even better than not selling stocks during a recession is to actually go on the offense. In bull markets, investors can occasionally find reasonably priced, wonderful businesses. But they can rarely find wonderful businesses trading at a significant discount to their fair value. Stock market crashes are the rare times when high-quality businesses can be found in the clearance aisle. Go shopping!
America, Anaconda, and Isis: When your GDP growth is higher than anyone expected, ISIS is on the run, the stock market is skyrocketing, and China is cooperating with you against North Korea, but the media still says your presidency is a failure. The Investor’s Scenario SurferI have run this calculator hundreds of time. it is in my assessment the most powerful tool for learning how stock investing works available today. You have the option of choosing a new stock allocation in each year of a realistic 30-year sequence of returns. You can compare your results with what you would have achieved with a Buy-and-Hold strategy. You will find that Valuation-Informed Indexing strategies yield larger portfolios in 90 percent of your tests of the concept. What matters is what happens in the long term! This tool tells you what strategies give the best results in the long term.

In January 2013, the British media reported that horse meat had been found in some meat products sold by Tesco, along with other retailers, particularly burgers. Prime Minister David Cameron called this "unacceptable", with products showing 29.1% horse meat in the "Value" range burger, which were supposed to be beef. It was later revealed in February 2013 that some of Tesco's Everyday Value Spaghetti Bolognese contained 60% horse meat. Tesco withdrew 26 of its products in response, and announced that they were working with authorities and the supplier to investigate the cause of the contamination.
With reference to your dream, Craig. My immediate response was that it pertained to Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. Harry the ginger and his Queen Meghan. H.M was introduced to Meghan at Balmoral. The estate refers to the ‘holy estate of matrimony. The three silver arrows to the three heraldic fleur de lis. Meghan and Harry too have been the subject of huge online hate.
According to Citigroup retail analyst David McCarthy, "[Tesco has] pulled off a trick that I'm not aware of any other retailer achieving. That is to appeal to all segments of the market". One plank of this strategy has been Tesco's use of its own-brand products, including the upmarket "Finest", mid-range Tesco brand and low-price "Value" encompassing several product categories such as food, beverage, home, clothing, Tesco Mobile and financial services.
I've posted a Guest Blog Entry at the Invest It Wisely site titled Stocks Are Far More Risky When Valuations Are High. Juicy Excerpt: My interpretation of these numbers is that stocks are a less risky asset class than most believe. So long as you limit yourself to buying stocks only at moderate or better prices and commit to a 10-year holding period, you are virtually guaranteed to at least break even. That’s a very good deal, given the upside potential that applies when stocks are…
“ Even in the days before perestroika, socialism was never a monolith. Within the Communist countries, the spectrum of socialism ranged from the quasi-market, quasi-syndicalist system of Yugoslavia to the centralized totalitarianism of neighboring Albania. One time I asked Professor von Mises, the great expert on the economics of socialism, at what point on this spectrum of statism would he designate a country as "socialist" or not. At that time, I wasn't sure that any definite criterion existed to make that sort of clear-cut judgment. And so I was pleasantly surprised at the clarity and decisiveness of Mises's answer. "A stock market," he answered promptly. "A stock market is crucial to the existence of capitalism and private property. For it means that there is a functioning market in the exchange of private titles to the means of production. There can be no genuine private ownership of capital without a stock market: there can be no true socialism if such a market is allowed to exist." ”
In 2014, Henry Blodget wrote that stocks were 40% overvalued and that he couldn’t find any data to suggest that the market would continue rising. Although he didn’t state that a crash was coming, he did tell us that stocks were likely to give “lousy returns” over the next ten years. He also concluded his article with some technical analysis from John Hussman, which cautioned that the S&P 500 could collapse after it reached 1,900.
Tesco operates a mobile phone business across the United Kingdom, Ireland, Slovakia, Hungary and the Czech Republic. It first launched in the UK in 2003 as a joint venture with O2 and operates as a mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) using the network of O2 with the exceptions of Hungary where the network of Vodafone Hungary is used and Ireland where Three Ireland is used. As a virtual operator, Tesco Mobile does not own or operate its own network infrastructure. By January 2011 Tesco announced it had over 2.5 million UK mobile customers.

This chart was done for today 2-5-2018 on the big drop but the planets are close enough and it should clarify what the heck is going on. Transiting Mercury is right on the ascendant with the South Node/Sun/Venus all together going through the first house and conjuncting the natal Saturn/Pluto that are there. Venus indeed hit that natal Saturn today. OK that’s a clear market correction. Uranus is in the 3rd inconjuncting the Sun in the 7th – 3rd-newspapers/media/communication and the 7th legal issues, partnerships and in Virgo work/service. It seems this is very much about the political stuff going on. The Moon triggered the natal Neptune and opposes the transiting Uranus in the 3rd. People are nervous – freaked out, afraid. Now we have this applying Uranus making a square to the natal Uranus and this aspect is creating the division we see in our country and the inside revolution taking place inside our government. Those we thought would serve us are serving their own agenda – at war with the press – leaking, push back. The ruler of the 8th house is Mercury in this chart and indeed there is seems to be a consistent Mercury trigger when the Stock Market falls. Here we see Mercury triggering the whole thing as it hits the first house. But Mercury is a fast moving planet but the funky underlying aspects are still there. Transiting Pluto in Capricorn in the 12th – house of hidden enemies is making that applying T-Square from the other side (as it did in 1929) and Uranus is making an applying square to natal Uranus. This was what I was looking at when I identified 2019 as the time frame. I think this is a precursor to the much bigger market meltdown we’ll see as these aspects get closer. These bad aspects will be triggered throughout the next couple of years. So I will have to dig in more to find the next time frame for the next freak out.
Price-Earnings ratios as a predictor of twenty-year returns based upon the plot by Robert Shiller (Figure 10.1, source). The horizontal axis shows the real price-earnings ratio of the S&P Composite Stock Price Index as computed in Irrational Exuberance (inflation adjusted price divided by the prior ten-year mean of inflation-adjusted earnings). The vertical axis shows the geometric average real annual return on investing in the S&P Composite Stock Price Index, reinvesting dividends, and selling twenty years later. Data from different twenty-year periods is color-coded as shown in the key. See also ten-year returns. Shiller states that this plot "confirms that long-term investors—investors who commit their money to an investment for ten full years—did do well when prices were low relative to earnings at the beginning of the ten years. Long-term investors would be well advised, individually, to lower their exposure to the stock market when it is high, as it has been recently, and get into the market when it is low."
Set forth below is the text of a comment that I put yesterday to a thread on Valuation-Informed Indexing at the My Personal Finance Journey site. The blog entry was posted some time ago. I only discovered the most recent posts by Carlyle (to which my post responded) yesterday. I would say is that the notion that Buy-and-Hold had anything to do with the economic downturn is beyond ridiculous. You speak for many with these words, Carlyle. I wish that one of those who feel this way would try…
I am closely following your predictions. You hit the bull’s eye by Brexit prediction. My interest, in particular, will be on 1) resignation of Hillary Clinton from politics because of the release of documents that reveal financial corruption and falsification of government documents, 2) “Serious threat of escalating conflict between China and India over northern border of Kashmir” – I think China’s assurance to Pakistan that it would cooperate in case of any foreign invasion is enough hint for this prediction coming true, 3) “Alliance between Russia and USA partitions Syria. Syria is left like a wasteland.” – when will the people in this area find peace and under what conditions? They are trapped like pawns in strength show game of the superpowers.
Clear all your debts in 2018 and do whatever it takes even if you have to skip the daily coffee or even make a major property downsize. You have so much useful Jupiter action in your Eighth House and also that Nodal pass over your Fourth House of property, triggering your natural luck factors – that’s one green light after another. Watch what goes down in May, June 2018 and again in the opening months of 2019 as you are going to be buying and selling real estate in a completely different climate. Forget what used to be, or what you used to know. You are going to have a pretty wild ride through all this, but you will gain if you recognise Jupiter when he knocks on the door. He typically arrives as the right person you need, at the right time, in the right place. We can often be complacent about Jupiter moments, but they pass so quickly. Try to jump on whatever comes. And drop a coin in a wishing well.
You are right to believe about a flu out break. Both A and B strains hit in the US back to back and many died. I have 17 years experience in medical lab work. In 1997 I had a gifted patient tell me before any end of the world scenarios happen the first big thing that will happen will be “A plague”. Everything else she told me has come to pass except this last prediction. Perhaps this event is close at hand, yes agree could be man made.

Refraining from tinkering with your portfolio, or even making dramatic changes such as fleeing to cash or switching to different investments altogether, may be challenging at times. That can especially be the case when the market appears to be going haywire and every news story and TV financial show you see seems to suggest that the market is on the verge of Armageddon.
The Fibonacci number sequence since 1932 is nearing an end. The numerical ratio is found throughout the natural world as a fundamental structural relationship in bee hives, leaves, snowflakes, etc. The sequence also correlates with major economic downturns such as 1987, 2000, 2008, 2013 (false), and 2016. 2018-2020 constitute the last three consecutive years before the series repeats. 2018 and 2019 could, therefore, mark brief but significant corrections leading to a severe depression in 2019 or 2020.
Many of the traditional religions, that are dependent on blind belief, will fail and more people will seek direct experience of the spiritual realms. By 2025 millions of people would have forsaken Islam. By this time Christianity too would have undergone a spiritual metamorphosis that will encourage people to seek a direct personal experience of spirituality through prayer and meditation. The years ahead will be a tremendous time to be living on earth for I believe that great things are soon to be revealed to the world. By 2050 the world will have entered the Golden Age when higher consciousness and miraculous living are possible. The time will come when all people will come to realize that our personal future and the collective future of the world can be changed for the better by our good thoughts and actions.
I have written about this extensively in my book called Messages from the Universe. In short, we are at the cusp of a better age (called Yugas) – in fact we are a few hundred years into it according to some enlightened Indian teachers. The transition will be difficult but as it progresses the spirit will become stronger than the powers of materialism. Initially we will discover new forms of energy. These will be material at first – for example the Vedas says there are 8 forms of electricity to be discovered – but also new spiritual powers will unfold such as ESP in the general population but also powers over matter. The later stages involve a sort of spiritual magnetism that will allow us direct communication with the spirit world and other dimensions of existence – but that’s many thousands of years ahead in humankind’s evolution. For now we have some bumps but all will be well.
Usually, HFT programs and computer trading works without a hitch. But once in a while problems do crop up. Back on Aug. 24, 2015, the United States’ three major stock indexes plunged on the open, but would recover much of their losses by midday. Among the reasons blamed for the dip were market makers and HFT traders. With so many stocks within the S&P 500 failing to open on time, and a number of exchange-traded funds under trading halts, HFTs and other high-speed traders shut down their systems, removing much-needed liquidity from the marketplace and exacerbating the early-day decline.
